Hair Loss
Reactional hair loss (telogen effluvium).
Telogen effluvium is diffuse shedding that happens when a physical or emotional stress pushes many hairs into the resting phase at the same time. It can be alarming, but it is often temporary.

Understanding it
About telogen effluvium
After a trigger, a large number of growing hairs shift into the resting (telogen) phase. They then shed together, typically two to three months later — which is why the cause is often not obvious at first.
The shedding is spread across the whole scalp rather than in patches. Hair commonly recovers over the following months once the trigger is resolved. When shedding continues for more than about six months, further assessment is recommended, as other types of hair loss can coexist.
Common causes
- High fever, illness or surgery
- Childbirth (postpartum shedding)
- Significant emotional stress
- Rapid weight loss or restrictive dieting
- Low iron stores or thyroid changes
- Starting or stopping some medications
Signs and symptoms
What you may notice.
- A sudden increase in shedding, all over the scalp
- More hair on your pillow, brush or in the shower
- Overall reduced volume rather than bald patches
- Shedding that began a few months after an illness, birth or stressful period

Nutrition and recovery

Frequently asked questions
Your questions, answered.
We do not diagnose medical conditions; when medical care is involved, we collaborate with your physician.
How long does telogen effluvium last?
It is often temporary and may settle within several months once the trigger is resolved, although some people experience a longer, chronic form.
Will my hair grow back?
In many cases, yes. Hair grows slowly, so changes are usually assessed over several months. Your progress is reviewed at regular re-evaluations.
How is it different from genetic hair loss?
Telogen effluvium causes diffuse shedding after a trigger, while genetic hair loss causes gradual, patterned thinning. They can occur together, which is why an assessment helps.
Is postpartum shedding normal?
Yes. Many people notice increased shedding a few months after giving birth. If it continues or seems excessive, an assessment can help.
