Hair Loss
Genetic hair loss (androgenetic alopecia).
Androgenetic alopecia, often called male or female pattern hair loss, is the most common form of hair loss. It is hereditary and usually progresses gradually — which is why early assessment matters.

Understanding it
About genetic hair loss
In people who are genetically predisposed, hair follicles are sensitive to DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a hormone derived from testosterone. Over time, sensitive follicles shrink — a process called miniaturization — and the growth phase shortens, so hairs grow back shorter and finer until some stop producing visible hair.
In men it typically begins at the temples and the crown. In women it usually appears as diffuse thinning over the top of the head and a widening part, while the front hairline is often preserved.
Common causes
- An inherited sensitivity of the follicles to DHT
- Family history on either side
- Age — it becomes more common over time
- Hormonal changes, for example around menopause
Signs and symptoms
What you may notice.
- A receding hairline at the temples (more common in men)
- Thinning at the crown
- A widening part or diffuse thinning on top (more common in women)
- Hairs that grow back shorter and finer
- A ponytail that feels thinner than before
Managing it
Approaches that may help.
Assess early
Because it is progressive, understanding the pattern and degree of miniaturization early leaves more options open.
Medical treatment
Topical and oral treatments are prescribed and monitored by physicians. If you use or are considering one, your care can be coordinated.
Scalp care and consistency
A balanced scalp environment and a consistent routine support the hair you have.
Non-surgical restoration
When thinning is advanced, a custom cranial prosthesis offers an immediate, natural-looking option.

Frequently asked questions
Your questions, answered.
We do not diagnose medical conditions; when medical care is involved, we collaborate with your physician.
Is genetic hair loss permanent?
It is progressive, but its course varies from person to person. Early assessment and consistent care may help preserve existing hair; your specialist will discuss realistic expectations.
Does it affect women?
Yes. Female pattern hair loss is common and usually appears as diffuse thinning and a widening part rather than a receding hairline.
At what age does it start?
It can begin as early as the late teens or twenties in men, and often becomes more noticeable with age in women.
What if my hair loss is already advanced?
For significant hair loss, a CNC® Custom Cranial Prosthesis offers a non-surgical, natural-looking option. A private CNC® consultation is the first step.
