Understanding it
About folliculitis
Mild folliculitis is common and often settles with gentle care once the trigger is removed. Persistent, painful or spreading folliculitis should be assessed by a physician, as some forms need medical treatment.
Rare, deeper forms can damage follicles and lead to scarring hair loss — which is why early attention matters. Avoid picking or squeezing the bumps.
Common causes
- Bacteria that normally live on the skin, most often Staphylococcus
- Yeast (Malassezia folliculitis)
- Friction, heat and sweat
- Tight headwear or occlusive products
- Shaving or close haircuts
- Product buildup on the scalp

Frequently asked questions
Your questions, answered.
We do not diagnose medical conditions; when medical care is involved, we collaborate with your physician.
Is folliculitis contagious?
Usually not in everyday contact, but avoid sharing towels, combs or razors while it is active.
Can folliculitis cause hair loss?
Mild folliculitis usually does not. Rare, deeper forms can damage follicles, so persistent or painful cases should be seen by a physician.
How can I reduce flare-ups?
Keeping the scalp clean, avoiding heavy buildup and tight headwear, and not picking at the bumps can help. Your specialist can recommend a suitable routine.
