Hair Loss
Autoimmune hair loss (alopecia areata).
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system targets hair follicles, causing hair to fall out — usually in round or oval patches. It can be distressing, and support is available.

Understanding it
About alopecia areata
Alopecia areata can appear at any age, in women and men alike. It often begins with one or more smooth, coin-sized patches on the scalp or beard. In some people it extends to the whole scalp (alopecia totalis) or to all body hair (alopecia universalis).
The follicles are not destroyed, so hair can regrow — sometimes on its own, sometimes after months — but the course is unpredictable and new patches may appear.
Common causes
- The immune system attacking the hair follicles
- A genetic predisposition; it can run in families
- More common in people with other autoimmune conditions, such as thyroid disease or vitiligo
- Episodes are sometimes reported after illness or significant stress
Signs and symptoms
What you may notice.

Managing it
Approaches that may help.
Dermatology care
A dermatologist confirms the diagnosis and can recommend medical treatments, from topical and injected options to oral treatments for more extensive cases.
Gentle scalp care
A calm, well-cared-for scalp supports comfort, especially when patches are exposed.
Immediate coverage
When hair loss is extensive, a custom cranial prosthesis can restore a natural appearance while medical care continues.
Support
Many people find it helpful to connect with others who have alopecia; your physician can suggest local or national organizations.
When to see a physician
Please see a dermatologist for diagnosis and medical treatment. When medical care is involved, we collaborate with your physician.

Frequently asked questions
Your questions, answered.
We do not diagnose medical conditions; when medical care is involved, we collaborate with your physician.
Can hair grow back with alopecia areata?
In many people hair regrows, sometimes without treatment, but the course is unpredictable and new patches can appear. A dermatologist can advise on medical options.
Is a cranial prosthesis suitable for alopecia?
CNC® may be considered by men and women with partial or significant hair loss, including alopecia areata, totalis and universalis.
Will a CNC® affect regrowth?
Please discuss this with your specialist and your dermatologist; your scalp is assessed and cared for at every maintenance visit.
Can insurance help?
For clients whose cranial prosthesis has been prescribed by a physician for medically related hair loss, we offer a complimentary insurance benefits check. Coverage depends on each client's individual policy, and reimbursement cannot be guaranteed.
