Understanding it
About seborrheic dermatitis
It is associated with the skin's oil (sebum) and an inflammatory reaction to Malassezia, a yeast that normally lives on the skin. Besides the scalp, it can affect the eyebrows, the sides of the nose, behind the ears and the chest.
Symptoms often come and go. It is not contagious and is not caused by poor hygiene. It can be managed well, but it often returns, so a consistent, suitable routine matters.
Common causes
- An inflammatory response to Malassezia yeast
- Oily skin and excess sebum
- Stress and fatigue
- Cold, dry weather
- Infrequent or unsuitable cleansing
- Some medical and neurological conditions
Signs and symptoms
What you may notice.

Managing it
Approaches that may help.
Medicated shampoos
Over-the-counter shampoos with ingredients such as ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide or salicylic acid are commonly used to control flaking.
Regular, suitable cleansing
Removing excess oil and buildup consistently helps keep symptoms under control.
Know your triggers
Stress and weather changes often precede flare-ups.
Medical treatment
If symptoms are severe or persistent, a dermatologist can prescribe stronger treatment.
When to see a physician
If flaking is severe, spreading or not improving, please see your physician or a dermatologist.
