Understanding it
About scalp eczema
Atopic eczema is linked to a weakened skin barrier and often runs in families alongside asthma or hay fever. Contact dermatitis is a reaction to something that touches the skin, such as an ingredient in shampoo, styling products or hair dye.
The scalp may feel tight, itchy or burning, and can look red, dry or, during a flare, weepy. Identifying and avoiding triggers is an important part of care.
Common causes
- A sensitive or weakened skin barrier
- A personal or family history of eczema, asthma or hay fever
- Irritating ingredients, fragrances or preservatives
- Allergy to hair dyes, such as PPD
- Hard water, heat and sweat

Gentle, fragrance-free products
Mild cleansing and fewer potential irritants support the skin barrier.
Calm the inflammation
A dermatologist can prescribe treatment for flares.
Protect the barrier
Hydrating, soothing care between flares supports comfort.
When to see a physician
If you suspect a reaction to a product or dye, stop using it and speak with your physician or a dermatologist.
